Quaternary ammonium compounds

Quaternary ammonium compounds: A wide variety of preservatives, surfactants, germicides, sanitizers, antiseptics, and deodorants used in cosmetics. Quaternary ammonium compounds are synthetic derivatives of ammonium chloride and are used in aerosol deodorants, after-shave lotions, anti dandruff shampoos, antiperspirants, cuticle softeners, hair colorings, hair-grooming aids, hand creams, hair-waving preparations, mouthwashes, hand creams, and regular shampoos. Diluted solutions are used in medicine to sterilize the skin and mucous membranes, All the Quaternary ammonium compounds can be toxic depending upon the dose and concentration. Concentrated solutions irritate the skin and can cause necrosis of the mucous membranes. Concentrations as low as 0.1% are irritating to the eye and mucous membranes. Ingestion can be fatal.
