Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel has evaluated DMDM hydantoin and determined that it is safe as a cosmetic ingredient. However, an increase in the use of DMDM hydantoin in cosmetic products will, inevitably, increase the risk of cosmetic dermatitis in consumers allergic to formaldehyde. Those severely allergic to formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers should avoid any possibility of contact.
